Stream Twig’s A Hound At The Hem Gets Flavorwired
SLIM TWIG’S A HOUND AT THE HEM STREAMS VIA FLAVORWIRE
OUT OCTOBER 28TH ON DFA RECORDS
Slim Twig’s DFA Records debut, A Hound At The Hem, is currently streaming in full via Flavorwire before its release on October 28th. Recorded on Toronto Island in collaboration with fellow Torontonian, Louis Percival, the album features string arrangements by Owen Pallett, and other collaborators including Meg Remy (U.S. Girls), Carl Didur (Zacht Automaat), and the St. Kitts Quartet. Upon its completion, Twig struggled to find wide release for A Hound At The Hem due to its uncompromising textural onslaught and disregard for genre. DFA is privileged to reissue this album in advance of the release of Twig’s newest works. Most of all, A Hound At The Hem poses the question; where next for Slim Twig, this promising and original auteur?
PRAISE FOR SLIM TWIG:
“The project has an outsider art feel to it, yet there’s a twisted professionalism about ‘Clerical Collar,’ a queasy psych-pop epic that matches Twig’s baritone crooning with a jaunty rhythm, a cheery chorus of backing vocals, and an arrangement by the St. Kitts string quartet. (The ever-present Owen Pallett chipped in some arrangements elsewhere on the album, btw.) The stomping piano rocker ‘All This Wanting’ is a fantastic voyage in its own right, like Spoon on a Serge Gainsbourg kick in another dimension.
– Stereogum
“. . . a wholly satisfactory solution for those [Scott] Walker fans who find themselves torn between the full-bodied melodrama of his earliest solo work and the often impenetrable soundscapes of the post-Climate Of Hunter years. It’s this balance of accessibility and experimentation that makes Hound – and indeed Twig himself – such an intriguing prospect. For every chunk of Zombies-esque pop-psych riffage, there’s a muffled hip-hop beat buried deep in the mix; for every elegant orchestral flourish, there’s a vocal that sounds like it’s been dubbed in Lee Perry’s echo chamber.”
– The Quietus
“A Hound at the Hem is a deeply weird album that draws from rock’s past without retreading much ground. At times I’m reminded of Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, but that doesn’t account for the grandiosity of Twig’s ambitions and reference points. That much is clear from the album’s orchestral elements, choir of voices, and patchwork of synths and feedback-laden guitars. Owen Pallett arranged the strings, and they’re nothing short of stunning – and unnerving.”
