Larkin Poe And Dawes Backed Conor Oberst At Newport Folk Festival, NYC’s Summer Stage And On “Late Show With David Letterman”

RH Music, Restoration Hardware’s music platform, will release Larkin Poe’s full-length debut on October 14 in the U.S. and on August 25 in the U.K. The two Atlanta-based sisters signed with RH Music in September, 2013 after self-releasing a series of EPs. Kin will be the inaugural release from RH Music.

Hailed as the “best discovery” at the 2014 Glastonbury Festival by The Observer, the band also elicited acclaim for its recent dates with Elvis Costello, who has often tapped Larkin Poe as his opening act and as backing musicians. In a review of the Ryman Auditorium show, the Nashville Scene noted, “[Larkin Poe] delivered a…set of swampy Southern Gothic folk highlighted by sinuous rhythms, Megan’s razorwire leads on resonator guitar, and their otherworldly harmonies.”

With Kin – produced by Chris Seefried (Fitz and the Tantrums, Lana Del Rey) in Los Angeles and Damien Lewis (Rihanna, Rita Ora) in Atlanta – the sisters explore their rich family history and the impact it has had on their own psyches. The band takes its name from Rebecca and Megan Lovell’s great, great, great, great grandfather, Larkin Poe, who was a Civil War wagon driver turned historian and a distant cousin to Edgar Allen Poe.

“There were a lot of creative, hotheaded, and intelligent branches that went against the grain in our family tree,” explains lead singer/guitarist Rebecca Lovell, 23, who also plays mandolin and violin. “As artists, I think some of those innate eccentricities, passed down from generation to generation, have been even further exaggerated in us!”

Megan Lovell, 25, who contributes lapsteel, dobro and vocals to the line-up, adds, “As sisters, we wanted to pick a band name that had familial significance since we are telling a lot of our ancestors’ stories.”

The protagonists of Larkin Poe songs are, like the sisters, strong-willed and straight talking. “Don’t,” the scintillating first single, is an anthem for anyone who’s ever had a lover try to pull the wool over their eyes while the bluesy “Jailbreak” leaves the listener wondering which party is really the ball and chain in a relationship. The lilting “Stubborn Love” celebrates a bond between two fiercely independent individuals while the melancholy “Overachiever,” which Rebecca describes as the most personal song she’s ever written, is a stunningly stripped-down piano-and-vocal ballad. The sisters have won admiration from such artists as Conor Oberst, who recruited Larkin Poe to join Dawes as his backing band for performances at the Newport Folk Festival (July 27) and at Summer Stage in New York City’s Central Park (July 29) as well as during his performance on “Late Show with David Letterman” (July 28).
