Landlady’s “Under The Yard” Debuts

Landlady Releases “Under The Yard” Video
Off Latest Full-Length Upright Behavior

Continues North American Tour
Including Dates With Rubblebucket, Those Darlins & More

“Landlady joins a lineage of New York City art-rock bands that transmute
existential questions and primal fears into exultant songs, bands like
Talking Heads, TV on the Radio and Dirty Projectors.” – The New York Times

“Tuneful and wry and melodic and ambitious…gesturing
towards rafters that only they see” – Pitchfork

“Adam Schatz, the chief songwriter of Landlady, is arguably one of the
most versatile and exciting musicians in recent years” – Paste

Today, Landlady is releasing its video for “Under The Yard” from its full-length Upright Behavior, out now on Hometapes. The Hannah Darrah-created video depicts the life-cycles of an ecosystem of creatures, bringing Landlady’s album art and lyrics to life through playful claymation. The video for the track, Refinery29 called “an awesome reminder of the creativity that still exists in rock music today.”  About the video, the band said:

“This song is fictional, sung by a person who’s in tune with the ground, his family, his organs, and ultimately knowing where he’d like to end up. By accident/on purpose it’s also about all of us. What we know and what we don’t know. What we’re hungry for and what we wish would stay a secret.

This video is the most advanced stop-motion work attempted by Hannah Darrah. She dove in head first drawing inspiration from Cari Vander Yacht’s artwork for our album Upright Behavior. This video was a big first for her as it is also our big first video. The beauty she was able to craft and destroy and move and shake hit us all in the guts the first time we saw the video. We had no edits or suggestions. We hope you don’t either.”

After finishing a very successful run of dates with Man Man, Landlady is continuing its extensive national tour, starting tomorrow (9/20) in Brooklyn, NY at the Brooklyn Night Bazaar with Those Darlins, at MidPoint Fest next week in Cincinnati, OH, and through October with Rubblebucket. The current list of dates can be found below, with more to be announced soon.

Since its release, Upright Behavior has been met with widespread and resounding praise. Pitchfork zeroed in on what makes Landlady so special, noting that “Landlady move through their second record Upright Behavior like the USS Sincerity, offering to share with you in your biggest fears: death, loneliness, lack of purpose.” Paste praised the record, saying “There’s not only a powerful focus on every track being sonically rich and diverse, but Schatz’ lyricism is as vibrant and captivating as the grandiose arrangements.” The New York Times noted that “there’s erudition and ingenuity in Landlady’s music.” KCRW observed that the tracks on Upright Behavior “satisfy one of the basic tenets of Great Songs: they rarely end up in the same place where they began.” Stereogum lauded the album’s centerpiece, saying “there are so many moving parts on ‘The Globe,’ but they come together to make one big, beautiful whole.” Consequence of Sound singled out “Girl,” noting it as “strewn with sporadic spells of glam rock theatrics and off-kilter experimental pop à la Dirty Projectors…unpredictable and jarring in the best possible way.” I Guess I’m Floating summarized the band aptly, saying “Landlady strikes a chord as the everyman’s gospel; secularly spirit-rousing but no less powerful, articulate in vision but universal in its delivery.”
