“Even-handed and steady, repetitious and assured, these eight songs encourage the listener to peer inside, where the details of his decisions lie in wait.” – NPR
“it’s not so much a break-up album as a celebration of breaking free.” – Pitchfork
“Both comforting and discomfiting, The Best Day recalls prime Youth, when their tense experimental attitude dovetailed with often sour but instantly accessible pop melodies.” – The Guardian

Thurston Moore’s first solo record since 2010, The Best Day, is out tomorrow, October 21, 2014, on Matador Records. In anticipation of the release and the second leg of his tour, he has shared the video for his song “Speak To The Wild,” directed by Santiago Mostyn, an artist Moore has always admired.
“My dad tells a story of when I first came to visit him in San Francisco. I was six, and living in rural Zimbabwe with my mother, and he had gotten together some cash to fly us over. Political circumstances had taken my parents in different directions when I was a baby and this would be my first time back to his city. On our first trip out to Golden Gate Park, my dad helped me onto a bicycle and smiled as I rode off. But I didn’t stop where I was supposed to, and he describes seeing his wild-haired African son disappearing into the woods of this enormous park, followed by the sinking fear that he may have just lost me for good. For my part, I was happy, and have since spent large parts of my life building new realities in this realm of the lost.”
The Best Day radiates with both Moore’s signature dynamism of dense thrashing electric guitars as well as blissful 12-string acoustic ballads. Salon remarked that “the album reveals once again Moore’s motivating restlessness and curiosity, showcasing an artist forever twisting expectations.” Recorded with Thurston’s current band line-up of James Sedwards (guitars, UK), Deb Googe (of My Bloody Valentine, bass, UK) and Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth, drums, USA), there are also a some tracks that feature all instrumentation by Moore. The Thurston Moore Band will pick back up on October 21st after recently completing their west coast tour.
