Steelism’s Bring “Marfa Lights”
Steelism’s New video “Marfa Lights” sends up vintage educational films
Check out the NPR “All Songs TV” premier here
Steelism included in Rolling Stone’s “10 New Artists You Need to Know”
New Tour Dates Announced
Instrumental band STEELISM have just released the video for “Marfa Lights,” a track from their Single Lock Records debut, 615 to Fame. Inspired by vintage educational shorts and the British BBC comedy show “Look Around You,” the video was filmed in Nashville and directed by Nashville filmmaker/musician Stewart Copeland. The video is premiering now at NPR’s “All Songs TV” which you can view here. NPR’s Ann Powers writes, “The Nashville instrumental group Steelism stands out for its ability to blend vintage styles – steel-guitar jazz, surf rock, the cool vibe of 1960s movie soundtracks – in ways that don’t feel dated.”
The band was also included in Rolling Stone Country’s “10 New Artists You Need to Know” which called the 615 to Fame an “eclectic, instrumental score for a cinematic road trip through the dustbowl via time machine.”
Steelism’s eclectic sound manages to remain fresh and current while referencing their instrumental forbearers such as The Shadows, Ennio Morricone, Booker T. and the M.G.’s and others. The album is avaialble through iTunes, Amazon and Bandcamp and additional tour dates have been announced, including stops in NYC, DC and Philadelphia.
Founded by two extraordinary young musicians, Jeremy Fetzer (guitar), and UK import Spencer Cullum Jr. (pedal steel), this instrumental band is joined by a team of the finest young musicians in Nashville for this striking collection of tracks with a vintage twist. Steelism let their instruments do the talking, creating intoxicating melodies and hooks with tastefully orchestrated arrangements.
The band truly shines in their live show: Fetzer commandeers his Telecaster with creative agility, making complex accent’s, core melodies and subtle nuances appear effortless. Cullum manipulates his pedal steel with equal dexterity, subverting the instrument’s typical twang with an array of diverse tones, textures and effects. They are unquestionably serious musicians, but they don’t take themselves too seriously. Having fun is a key component to everything Steelism does, which is especially evident when performing on stage. Playing live has earned them many fans including label mates St. Paul & the Broken Bones and artists such as Deer Tick, Wanda Jackson and Jonny Fritz, all of whom they’ve supported in concert.
