The Rural Alberta Advantage’s Mended With Gold Arrives September
The Rural Alberta Advantage Mended With Gold out September 30 on Saddle Creek
KEXP Premieres Mended With Gold’s “On The Rocks”
“The Toronto-based trio, led by born-and-bred Albertan Nils Edenloff are full of nostalgic
songs about hometowns and heartbreaks, marrying salt-of-the-earth acoustic rock to energetic rhythms and grand orchestral arrangements.” – Pitchfork
“The band shines in its own ability to blend pared-down composition with fast-
paced percussion and lyrics that could only come from, well, rural Alberta.” – Filter
The Rural Alberta Advantage have unveiled another song from their upcoming third album Mended With Gold. KEXP premiered “On The Rocks” and said, “the band continue to create powerful folk-pop songs with deep emotional resonance.” Consequence Of Sound added, “The track permeates a sense of imperfection, from the shaky rumble of drums to the grimy, lo-fi sheen ad the not-quite-harmonious melodies. But within all that is some of the most pure and visceral displays of emotion, represented brilliantly by Nils Edenloff’s manic howl of a croon. “On The Rocks” is also streaming and available to share via SoundCloud. Mended With Gold, will be released on September 30 on Saddle Creek. The twelve-track album was recorded at Toronto’s Candle Recording with the band’s long-time live engineer Matt Lederman (Hayden, !!!, Besnard Lakes) alongside co-producer Leon Taheny (Owen Pallett, Austra, F*cked Up). The album is available for pre-order now on CD & LP in Saddle Creek Online Store and digitally via Itunes. A limited Indie Exclusive version of the album will be released on clear vinyl with metallic gold sputter and will be available at local, independent record stores and through the Saddle Creek Online Store. A full list of tour dates can be found below.
“The song itself is an amalgamation of a lot of different memories and emotions,” says frontman Nils Edenloff, “But the heart of it centers around the acceptance of an ending relationship. I’m personally really happy with the chorus of the song: Our Hearts they were strong / Never made a sound / Our love was on the rocks / The day we let it out / Nothing going wrong / Nothing going down. There is a resignation to the chorus, but not in a hurtful way; it’s more an honest acceptance.”
In 2006 singer-songwriter Nils Edenloff, percussionist Paul Banwatt, and multi-instrumentalist Amy Cole came together to release their debut self-titled EP as The Rural Alberta Advantage. The ensuing years have brought two full-length albums (2008’s Hometowns and 2011’s Departing), widespread critical praise (SPIN, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NPR, among others), two Juno Awardnominations (Best New Group, Video of the Year), the Polaris Music Prize Long List, and a hard earned reputation as one of the most impressive live bands you’ll ever see. It was through all of this that The RAA’s latest album, Mended With Gold, took shape.
