Rubblebucket Meets Landlady To Cover Nina Simone

STEREOGUM PREMIERES
RUBBLEBUCKET AND LANDLADY’S
NINA SIMONE COVER “BE MY HUSBAND”
SURVIVAL SOUNDS OUT NOW ON COMMUNION
ON TOUR NOW

“On the strength of a style melding propulsive polyrhythms, syncopated horns, New Wave-era art-school rock, and gleaming pop, all within a slyly psychedelic aesthetic, Rubblebucket may be on the verge of a breakthrough.”—The Boston Globe

“For anyone who doubted Rubblebucket’s longevity, look no further. They can write catchy, compelling music that will make anyone with a pulse dance.”—Paste

“…bobs along merrily with warmth and punch provided by muted brass, intrigue courtesy of the unexpected twists in the arrangements, and humor by a penchant for whistle solos.”—The Wall Street Journal

“The track’s guitars build over glitchy sonics and finally erupt into a tropical-friendly crescendo.”—SPIN on “Sound of Erasing”

“The Brooklyn-based band mixes dynamics with studied aplomb: pounding drums, warped synth scratches, and a bold horn section are wedded to singer Kalmia Traver’s conversational, lilting singing style, which altogether create the perfect soundtrack for these surreal escapades. It’s baroque pop of the extremely epic variety.”—Noisey

In honor of their joint tour, Rubblebucket’s Annakalmia Traver and Landlady’s Adam Schatz respectively joined forces to make a special recording of Nina Simone’s “Be My Husband,” premiered exclusively today on Stereogum. The new cover can be streamed HERE. To celebrate their upcoming tour dates. Rubblebucket will perform songs from their Communion Records debut Survival Sounds, which is out now.

Survival Sounds was produced and mixed by John Congleton (St. Vincent, Modest Mouse, David Byrne) and recorded at Mission Sound Studio in Brooklyn. According to Toth, “Working with John Congleton was invigorating. He further reinforced us not over-thinking things. Be bold, make decisions, commit, go. He’s also a true artist of a very high caliber and has strong convictions about things. It was cool to really absorb his spirit and aesthetic over time. I also liked that he was down to climb up onto desks, wrestle, do weird dances, and talk dirty. His messed up sense of humor fit right into the Rubblebucket social atmosphere.”

Rubblebucket was formed after Kalmia Traver and Alex Toth met while attending The University of Vermont. Following graduation, the two were joined by Adam Dotson (trombone, euphonium, vocals), David Cole (drums) and Ian Hersey (electric guitar) and released their self-titled debut in 2009. The group’s second full-length, Omega La La, was produced and mixed by Eric Broucek (Hercules and Love Affair, Classixx, Holy Ghost) and its single “Came Out of A Lady” was chosen as one of the Top 50 Songs of 2011 by Paste. The album was available online for free two months prior to its official release and was downloaded 50,000 times. The band made its television debut on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in 2012. Survival Sounds is the band’s label debut and comes on the heels of 2013’s Save Charlie EP and 2012’s Oversaturated EP.
