Ramblin’ Jack Elliott Hits The Road
Spanning six decades, the career of Ramblin’ Jack Elliott is still going strong. A lover of storytelling and veteran troubadour style musician, Ramblin’ Jack is an icon of American roots and folk music. On tour he is in his element and known for telling the tales gathered along his magnificent journey through the roots of Folk, Blues, Americana and Cowboy music.
There are no degrees of separation between Jack and the real thing. He is the guy who ran away from his Brooklyn home at fourteen to join the rodeo and learned his guitar from a cowboy. In 1950, he met Woody Guthrie, moved in with the Guthrie family and traveled with Woody to California and Florida, from the redwood forests to the Gulf Stream waters. Jack became so enthralled with the life and composer of This Land Is Your Land, The Dust Bowl Ballads, and a wealth of children’s songs that he completely absorbed the inflections and mannerisms, leading Guthrie to remark, “Jack sounds more like me than I do.” Elliott’s prolific legacy has influenced Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, the Grateful Dead, Tom Waits and Bruce Springsteen, just to name a few. Awarded the National Medal of Arts for his contribution to folk music, this two-time Grammy winner has spent more than 30 years on the road and has recorded over 40 albums. Some say that without Ramblin’ Jack there would be no Bob Dylan. Arlo Guthrie has praised, “Ramblin’ Jack is the translator of my father’s music”. On the road he finds magic in the people and inspiration from other artists, all the while making his own definitive path that takes us right into the heart and soul, the people and places, the true history of American folk music. Be a part of Ramblin’ Jack’s latest journey and join him for song and story at one of his stops along this summer’s tour.
