Pokey LaFarge Tours For Something In The Water

Pokey LaFarge’s Something In The Water Inspires Critical Praise;

New Tour Dates Announced

Pokey LaFarge’s Something In The Water, which was released April 7 on Rounder, is charming audiences and critics around the world. LaFarge’s tour of New Zealand and Australia, which saw the band play to packed houses on every date of the tour, was a smashing success. Steve McCabe of New Zealand’s 13th Floor applauded the band’s “wildly, infectiously, exuberantly catchy songs,” noting that LaFarge “sang with power and intensity, leading a band that knew exactly what he needed.” The Sydney Morning Herald’s Bernard Zuel proclaimed it “good-time music that would make you forget for an hour or so the grimness of daily life.”

Stateside, the press has been equally enthusiastic. Writing in Rolling Stone Country, Nancy Dunahm praised  LaFarge’s “musical mix of western swing, traditional country, ragtime and jazz, wrapped around lyrics that are nothing short of short stories from a Midwestern perspective. The combination evokes a tangible spirit that moves strangers to smile at each other, hold doors and scoot in chairs to make room for those who dance with abandon as LaFarge and his band perform,” while American Songwriter’s Hal Horowitz calls the album “immensely enjoyable,’ and goes on to say that “the sheer joy of these performances in contagious.”

The Knoxville News-Sentinel’s Wayne Bledsoe observes, “What’s wonderful about LaFarge is how fresh he makes it all sound. He’s pulling from the less-mined aspects of vintage music and probably introducing generations to genres they haven’t heard. Most importantly, though, he’s creating something that’s a whole lot of fun.” The Bluegrass Situation’s Michael Verity writes, “The musicianship here is exceptional, the songs sound classic without being obsequious, and LaFarge’s voice — a mix of Al Jolson, Hank Williams, and Cab Calloway — fits it all to a “T.”  In All Music’s review of Something in the Water, writer Mark Deming says the album “ranks with his best recorded work to date, maintaining the rootsy sway and swagger of his earlier albums but boasting stronger instrumental interplay and an extra dose of pep that makes the finished product especially winning.”

LaFarge’s world tour will take him to his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri for three shows this weekend, on April 24 – 26. New dates have just been announced, including a series of West Coast appearances in July.
