The Pines Cover Jimmy Webb’s “Highwayman” And Join Bon Iver For Tour, Prep New Album

May 28, 2014: The Pines, currently recording their follow-up to their acclaimed Red House album Dark So Gold, will join friend and fellow Midwesterner S. Carey of Bon Iver on a 17-city North American tour kicking off in late June behind Carey’s new album, Range of Light (scroll down for complete dates). The Pines’ sound, starkly poetic and “quietly gripping” (Rolling Stone), has brought them a loyal cult following. Having performed together many times around the Midwest, the Pines are excited to join in this natural pairing and bring this great show to West Coast and Canadian audiences.

Although their music evokes the winter fields and barren landscapes of their native Iowa, Pines founders David Huckfelt and Benson Ramsey surprisingly met in Arizona, where they both lived in a Mexican barrio and first began playing together. The son of Greg Brown’s producer and sideman Bo Ramsey, Benson was reared on folk and blues music and those influences continue to shine through, even on their louder electric songs. David shares Benson’s deep love for traditional music, and together the two craft songs that evoke the ancient, while incorporating newer rock and pop grooves. Both strong writers, singers and instrumentalists, David and Benson’s gauzy vocal harmonies give the band its instantly identifiable, lush sound.

After forming the Pines, they returned to the Midwest and settled in Minneapolis, a city that has launched many folk and rock acts from Bob Dylan to The Replacements to The Jayhawks. Like these Twin Cities legends, The Pines weave together many musical styles to create their own unique, haunting sound.
