Journeyman bassist Phil Bowler brings his band to the Zinc Bar for the first time to celebrate a new Pocket Jungle release after a long time out. In a career spanning almost 40 years, Bowler has played and recorded with Rahsaahn Roland Kirk, Max Roach, Jackie McLean, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Hilton Ruiz, Ralph Peterson Jr., Geri Allen, Mario Rivera, Terence Blanchard, Donald Harrison and many others.
Bowler formed Pocket Jungle in the early 90’s with younger players who were hungry to absorb his vision for a group that was always stretching, but always staying true to the pocket (groove). In 2013, the band reunited to record new material and to re-vamp a few old favorites, part as tribute to Phil by his protégées, and part as an excuse to get together and have a good time.
With a November 11th street date, the new Zoho Music release marks Bowler’s first official release as a leader, and a chance for a big tribute celebration at the Zinc on November 20th. Music from the CD will be performed, which includes tunes by all bandmembers: William Bausch: drums, Paul Carlon: tenor saxophone, Scott Latzky: drums & tabla, Pete Smith: guitar; as well as music by Bobby Hutcherson, Steve Coleman, Harvey S and others. Get ready for some deep pocket served up by a masterful bassist and this close-knit group.
