New Order & Iggy Pop Sell Out Benefit Concert for Tibet House

Iggy Pop, New Order and More Rock the Sold-Out 24th Annual Tibet House US Benefit Concert Last Night at Carnegie Hall

“For a few glorious moments at the 24th annual Tibet House benefit Tuesday night, New York’s Carnegie Hall devolved into a scene straight out of a CBGB fever dream…many in the crowd could no longer take it, storming to the front of the stage and going completely apeshit. The Carnegie Hall ushers, who minutes earlier were diving on anyone that dared to whip out a cellphone, had no chance of stopping it and didn’t even bother to try. It was the kind of scene only possible at the Tibet House benefit…” – Rolling Stone

“Fans jumped high in their seats. Others raced to the front of the stage. The rest of the audience yelled excitedly. Carnegie Hall is a seated venue, but music lovers watching Iggy Pop and members of New Order on Tuesday night were eager and lost in the music…” – Associated Press

(New York, NY – March 12, 2014) – Last night Iggy Pop, New Order, members of The National, Patti Smith, Sufjan Stevens and more came together for a remarkable, sold-out show in support of the 24th Annual Tibet House US Benefit Concert at New York City’s legendary Carnegie Hall. The evening was curated by artistic director and lauded American composer Philip Glass who also performed. Chuck Close, Uma Thurman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard andArden Wohl were Honorary Chairpersons for an unforgettable night that further solidified the Tibet House US Benefit Concert as one of the most exciting annual events on New York City’s cultural calendar.

The evening was full of stunning musical performances and extraordinary collaborations. Godfather of punk Iggy Pop and synth-pop trailblazers New Order joined forces on stage, while Sufjan Stevens contributed vocals on a few songs with The National. Stevens, guitarist Bryce Dessner (The National) and brilliant young American composer Nico Mulhy performed selections from their project Planetarium. Mulhy also joined Philip Glass, playing side-by-side together on a baby grand piano for Glass’ captivating song “The Chase.”

There was also a moving, one-of-a-kind collaboration created by UK performance poet Mike Garry and British composer Joe Duddell. The pair set Garry’s celebrated ode to legendary Factory Records owner, Anthony H. Wilson, to music.  The musical version of “Saint Anthony,” is inspired by “Your Silent Face” by New Order, one of the many legendary bands that Wilson signed. New Order was on hand to play along to the poem with lead singer Bernard Sumner on a melodica.  The night also featured beautiful pieces by Robert RandolphPatti Smith & her Band, plus a remarkable performance by Tibetan folk artist Techung. Most of the artists’ sets also included the Scorchio String Quartet who contributed magnificent orchestrated arrangements to these powerful songs. All the artists joined together for a grand finale of Patti Smith’s “People Have The Power.”
