Premiering Exclusively on Stereogum

First and Only Remix by the EELS Frontman

De Biasio to Perform on Jools Holland Oct. 7

Belgian artist Melanie De Biasio is not one to be pigeonholed. Since the release of her latest album No Deal, she’s been heralded as a new voice in jazz, named the “Belgian Billie Holiday,” and drawn comparisons to Nina Simone among many others. She notes artists such as Frank Zappa, Abbey Lincoln, Pink Floyd, and late-period Talk Talk as influences, but her semi-improvised, dark, minimalist approach places her in a category entirely on her own. Earlier today, she revealed her latest collaboration – a remix of her song “I Feel You” by Eels’ frontman Mark Oliver Everett. Premiering exclusive on Stereogum, this is Everett’s first and only remix of a song.

De Biasio and Everett met for the first time when she supported Eels on their tour across Europe earlier this year, playing venues such as legendary Royal Albert Hall in London. The two became close friends and as a fan of Melanie’s music, Everett decided to do his first remix to one of her songs. The track will be available for purchase later this fall.

“This remix made me speechless and was given to us by Mark after a fine tour we had with Eels in Europe,” said De Biasio. “I think it’s really special and sounds like a mash up between Eels spectrum and mine. It sounds like the sun rising out of a dark night.”

De Biasio’s sophomore album No Deal was released in the US earlier this year following its tremendous success all over Europe. Its received praises from The Guardian, Wondering Sound, KCMP’s The Current, BBC, MOJO Magazine, LA Times, MTV Iggy, Q Magazine, KCRW, and Jazziz Magazine where it was called “seductive in a cinematic kind of way,” describing her voice as containing “a dark-hued sultriness underscored with an air of longing. Songs like ‘The Flow’ could fit in on the soundtrack to a David Lynch movie.”

Melanie was also featured on KCRW’s “Rhythm Planet” last week where host Tom Schnabel stated that “Her music is dark and moody, the piano chords are spare, drumming is minimal. She daringly covers Nina Simone, something that would scare away most singers, but she delivers beautifully; she does Nina proud.”

Next week on October 7th, Melanie will perform on the prestigious BBC program “Later with Jools Holland” and will be the first Belgian artist to perform on the show in 19 years.
