Mike Ragogna: Maceo, what advice do you have for new artists?
Maceo Parker: You know, I always say something like, “Try to get into a situation where you can play as much as you possibly can,” because I think that the most important thing is just experience and the only way to get experience is to do it over and over and more and more and more. That’s what happened with me. It seemed like the more we did it, the better we got into doing what we thought we wanted to do. So that’s first for me. When I’m talking to students or someone who’s thinking about pursuing a career in being a musician, it’s “Get in a situation when you play, and just play. All the time. Pretty soon, you’ll get really comfortable with what you’re doing.
