KNTRLR’s XXX Debuts
KNTRLR Release “Five-Minute Sci-Fi Epic” “XXX” on Entertainment Weekly
New Album The Great Filter Out February 24
“The video’s smoggy post apocalyptic atmosphere makes an interesting juxtaposition with the song’s optimistic lyrics” – Entertainment Weekly
“It’s as if the Walkmen transported themselves to a skuzzy underground NYC club in the ’80s, and we can’t get enough of it.” – PureVolume
“Definitely listen to this band, they are sleek and mesmerizing” – Pancakes and Whiskey
Charles and Michael are KNTRLR, the duo behind the arctic calypso sound of The Great Filter from Goodnight Records, their first full-length set to be released on February 24.
“XXX” which premiered on PureVolume has been described by Michael as a “godless pep talk to my kids to listen to after I inevitable get ran over by a bus.” Now “XXX” has been paired up with some “epic” visuals in a music video that premiered on Entertainment Weekly. Of the video they said, “There are bands that take care of their obligations to make music videos with clever ways of stretching a tiny budget, and then there are bands like electronics-heavy rockers KNTRLR who for their new single “XXX” have gone all out and produced an entire sci-fi short complete with action sequences and a generous serving of special effects.”
The Great Filter expands KNTRLR’s sound just as well as it expresses their maturity, both in music and in life experience. This is also on show in the album’s teaser, which you can watch here. It’s clear, especially for long time fans, that the men behind KNTRLR have evolved, but their backgrounds may belie some of the pensive lyrical storytelling of their best songs.
As KNTRLR evolved into a five-piece live act over the years, their music became further charged by the confrontation of mortality. From love and death to loss and family, the sum of the band’s life experiences has created a darker collection of songs. “XXX” is the first single from their new record, and the strong confidence in the sound they’ve built is obvious; the life experience has served KNTRLR’s music well.
While their music has been impacted by these experiences, their live show has also had its own share of growth. Be sure to catch KNTRLR live this winter.
