CD RELEASE SHOW SEPTEMBER 9, NYC
A rare vocalist and songwriter with a jazz heart and a hip hop soul, Kellylee Evans was a young at-home mom of two who sang in the shower before her life changed. After her mother died, the Toronto native realized she needed to free her dreams of singing as a career. She started hanging out at jazz clubs and jazz festivals like the Ottawa Jazz Festival, where she was challenged by noted American jazz bassist/composer Lonnie Plaxico to jam with them. She did and next thing she knew, she was performing at The Kennedy Center in the Thelonious Monk Vocals Competition before Quincy Jones. She won 2nd place.
Now Kellylee has four recordings, a Juno Award, an adoring French fan base and has performed around the world opening for Dianne Reeves, Tony Bennett, Derek Trucks and George Benson among others. An incredibly dynamic artist, she brilliantly re-imagines music by Eminen, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog, Stromae, John Legend and more on her captivating U.S. debut on Motéma Music, I Remember When out July 22, 2014.
Kellylee’s rousing table-top performance was the buzz of last month’s Exit 0 International Jazz Festival and a highlight of this month’s week-long Wawa Welcome America festival curated by Questlove and the City of Philadelphia.
