After an incredible summer that included the release of her critically acclaimed Robot Heart EP and national tour, including a bunch of festivals and sold-out dates, Kawehi is ready to take the fall by storm with new tour dates and the launch of a Kickstarter campaign for her new EP, Evolution. Showing no signs of slowing down, Kawehi has already confirmed international and Stateside dates keeping her on the road for the month of October. She’ll take her band with her – Ableton, a midi-keyboard, guitar, and beatboxing to create loops/layers. Kawehi will head overseas for shows in Guam, Singapore and Malaysia later this week and will return for a mini-east coast tour later this month, including two CMJ showcases. All tour dates are listed below. The new Evolution EP will pick up where Robot Heart left off. Kawehi will finish the story for her fans – Will the Robot become human? Does she like what she’s become? How does she feel about her fellow man? All these questions will be asnwered when Kawehi releases Evolution later this year. Once again, she launched a kickstarter to help record and release the new EP. In just one day her goal was met. With another two weeks left on the campaign, she’s already reached more than 10x her original goal.
Kawehi announced the release of Robot Heart by partnering up with The Music Ninja to premiere the first single, “Anthem.” Shortly after, fans were given a taste of the entire release before it hit stores on July 15, 2014 when Maxim Magazine streamed the entire EP on their site. Recorded in Kawehi’s studio in Lawrence, KS, everything you hear on Robot Heart was written and created by Kawehi. Each of her releases focuses on a particular idea or sound. With Robot Heart, Kawehi wanted to make music from a robot’s perspective – a female robot, to be exact, who wants to partake in all of the joy and disappointment that comes with being a human. In an interview with Philthy Mag, she explained her creative process: “Every EP’s always completely different. Like, I’ll do an all pop EP, and then an all beat-box EP, and then an EP of all songs written on toys, so they never sound like anything I’ve already put out.” When asked about Robot Heart she admitted creating this new identity added another layer, saying, “A lot of my cathartic release is through writing and writing about my own experience, so it was cool for this one to write from a different perspective and things I’m influenced by. Like, sci-fi is a big one.”
Kawehi has made quite the impression on the music world in the last few months since releasing the video for her cover of Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box.” The video has been picked up worldwide since becoming a “Staff Pick” on Vimeo. Coverage of the song began popping up everywhere – People Magazine, Spin, Huffington Post, Elle, Esquire, landing on the home page of Reddit and more. The folks at Esquire loved it so much, they asked her to do an exclusive recording of another cover for their site. Her cover of Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel” has reached over 2.3 million views and earlier this summer, it caught the attention of Diddy who not only posted it to his facebook page, but declared “She’s dope!” This isn’t the first – or last – time the singer has made a splash. She was also featured on Music Connection’s list of Hot 100 Unsigned Artists & Bands in 2011, was a Selected Artist on Fuse TV, and CBS News included her in their line up of Most Viral Videos.
“Armed with only the gifts that god gave her (and a few musical inventions that help her do this on her own) she creates everything in her music.
Beatboxing to create a percussion, laying down ethereal vocals, playing guitar, playing keyboards…all of these are done entirely by her,
and we couldn’t be more excited that she chose that route.”
– The Music Ninja
“Off the top of my head, I can’t think of a cooler or more credible artist to gain the majority of their critical acclaim from
cover tunes than Kawehi (She also pens her own songs, which are even better.)”
– Philthy Mag
