Joey Ramone’s Birthday Bash Tomorrow
*BARB WIRE DOLLS AND CJ RAMONE TOP BILL FOR
JOEY RAMONE BIRTHDAY BASH*
*15th ANNUAL EVENT SLATED FOR MAY 19 IN NYC*
Rock n’ Roll Hall of Famer and cultural icon *JOEY RAMONE* would have turned 64 this year had he not succumbed to lymphoma in 2001, just one month before his birthday. Even after his passing, *JOEY*’s mother Charlotte Lesher and brother Mickey Leigh kept their promise to celebrate the event with a huge party honoring the beloved musician, and the annual *JOEY RAMONE BIRTHDAY* *BASH* was born.
Making a return appearance at the *BASH* is this year’s co-headliner CJ Ramone, the bassist and sometimes singer who replaced original bassist Dee Dee, in The Ramones. CJ joined the group in 1989, replacing original member Dee Dee Ramone, and remained with the group until they retired in 1996. Also topping the bill are the groundbreaking Barb Wire Dolls. The quartet started out in a Greek artist commune, moved to Los Angeles and performed on over 650 stages in 22 countries in just 4 years. They’re a DIY phenomenon with a story that reads like no other. The Barb Wire Dolls embody the Ramones spirit of high-energy rock n’ roll with snarling hooks and street tough musicianship.
Also performing at the 2015 *BIRTHDAY BASH* is Andy Shernoff, founding member of original New York punk band The Dictators, a member of The Resistance with *JOEY RAMONE*, and a guest musician on *JOEY*’s posthumously released debut solo album, *Don’t Worry About Me. Sharing the bill is former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock; the legendary classic rock super group, The Blue Coupe, featuring members of The Blue Oyster Cult and Alice Cooper; Mickey Leigh with his classic band STOP; infamous proto-punk band David Peel & The Lower East Side; The Sic F*cks; The Independents (a group *JOEY* managed); and George Tabb, among other cult acts.
As in years past, the spectacular party will conclude with a performance by The Joey Ramone Birthday Bashers featuring Mickey Leigh, Walt Stack, CJ Ramone, and surprise guests.
The Masters of Ceremony will be John Holmstrom (Punk Magazine founder) and Pete Aschner. Also attending the festivities is Ramones confidant and tour manager, Monte Melnick who was the band’s tour manager for 22 years. Additional surprises are anticipated at the evening’s events.
Joey Ramone passed away April 15th 2001 after a seven-year battle with Lymphatic cancer. He had a passion for encouraging up-and-coming bands by showcasing them at the “Joey Ramone Presents…” and Joey Ramone’s Birthday Bash events which he organized for several decades before his passing.
Joey’s brother, Mickey Leigh, who shared that passion with his brother, has pledged to continue to organize the event annually. “The Joey BASH has carried on the tradition of presenting both well known, and lesser known bands that make great music. But, it also serves another, and possibly more necessary, purpose emotionally, which is the gathering of JOEY’s family, friends, and fans to celebrate him on what would otherwise be a sad, somber day,” Leigh explained.
