—NPR “All Things Considered”

Imelda May’s third U.S. release Tribal is out now on Verve Records. The album is available for streaming on The New York Times “Press Play” and she is featured in the current issue of The New Yorker’s “The Talk of the Town.”
After selling out show after show of this summer’s tour and playing at Outside Lands Festival, May will return to the U.S. to play a string of North American dates this fall, including her first appearance at Austin City Limits. May has launched her new television music program in September, “The Imelda May Show” on Ireland’s #1 rated television network RTE. The show will feature performances by legendary musicians as well as up-and-coming artists from around the world.
Of her live show, The Los Angeles Daily News says; “Music doesn’t get more alive than when the Irish singer is belting out a song on stage. So as infectious as numbers like ‘Wild Woman’ sound recorded, there is an electric feeling when done live.” The Edmonton Journal describes May’s performance at the Edmonton Folk Festival as, “Impromptu, spontaneous, sincere, it was one of those won’t-forget-it moments…the cheering and the grinning from the crowd.” See fall tour dates below.
Tribal debuted at #1 in Ireland and #3 in the UK. The Guardian gave the album four stars, saying “This album is no time capsule; it’s fresh and embracing…” while The Times praises May’s “raw, impassioned vocals.” Tribal remains on the top ten album charts in Ireland, where it has been since its debut. This record marks the first release from May since 2010’s Mayhem, of which The Los Angeles Times commented, “Ireland-born Imelda May’s career is fostered by paying homage to legends like Buddy Holly and Johnny Cash and, more importantly, furthering rockabilly’s cross-pollination into New Orleans jazz, delta blues and amp-splitting punk aggression.”
May’s own brand of rockabilly sound has been a hit, with her previous release Mayhem hitting Platinum in Ireland and Gold in the U.K. May has seen performances on “Later With Jools Holland,” “Conan,” “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” and four performances on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” to name a few. Performing a fusion of surf guitars, blues and rockabilly, her current lineup consists of husband Darrel Higham on guitars, Al Gare on double-bass, Dave Priseman on trumpet and Steve Rushton on drums. The band has shared stages with Bono, Chuck Berry, David Gilmore, Shane Macgowan, Van Morrison, Jeff Beck, Wanda Jackson, Paul Brady, Jamie Cullum, and Meatloaf.
