“Room 93”, the debut EP from New Jersey native and artistic firebrand Ashley Frangipane – known to her legions of fans as Halsey – is set for release October 28 on Astralwerks. When Halsey announced the EP and pre-order through her social networks earlier this week, the news was met with fervent excitement from fans and #Room93 became a worldwide trending topic on Twitter.
The five-track collection features Halsey’s searing debut single “Ghost” – a candid account about leaving an emotionally vacant relationship – that launched the then-unsigned artist into regular rotation on Sirius XM Hits 1, vaulted her up the iTunes’ alternative music chart, and led to multiple label offers including Astralwerks (who signed her one day after hearing the track).
Romance oozes through Room 93 both in aesthetics and in storytelling. The title references a fictional hotel room with the tracks exploring a loose narrative on the human intimacy of these temporary domiciles.
“It’s a private world where you can really be yourself – or choose to be someone else, explains Halsey (who is fittingly on the road – and in hotel rooms – right now while on tour with The Kooks).
“I’ve lived the past year in and out of hotels and have formed human relationships that have thrived and failed in the setting of those rooms. The setting of a hotel is forever permanent, and unchanging. The unsettling nature of this ‘alternate universe’ is what inspired the EP.”
New EP tracks include “Is There Somewhere” (which is available with “Ghost” as an instant download when fans pre-order the EP), “Empty Gold”, “Trouble (Stripped)”, and “Hurricane” which premieres exclusively today at Vogue.com.
Set in Brooklyn, the somnambulant “Hurricane” is a spectral look back at a fling with a drugged-out lover floating away from her. “There’s an odd bit of feminism in it,” she notes. “There’s triumph in the lyric; ‘I don’t belong to no city. I don’t belong to no man.'” Conversely, the sparse “Trouble” explores a man “who finds sick, sadistic pleasure in making me feel bad.”
“Empty Gold” explores that particular moment in a struggling relationship where you know you need to walk away to save yourself, but you’re still hopeful and pleading to save it. “It’s like the end of an action movie when the hero finds vindication. It has this build up, you know? It feels climactic.”
Though passions may run the gamut, there is a common thread that runs throughout her music: The protagonists never stick around to be victimized. The same can be said of the artist; Halsey strikes an uncanny balance of the sincere and subversive to powerful effect.
