The Drums Debut “I Can’t Pretend” From Encyclopedia

THE DRUMS ANNOUNCE NEW SINGLE “I CAN’T PRETEND”

ENCYCLOPEDIA OUT SEPTEMBER 23

The Drums present their new single today, “I Can’t Pretend.” This song is yet another taste of the band’s forthcoming record Encyclopedia out September 23.

Jonny Pierce says of the song, “The moment we take our first breath, we become slaves to this life and to it’s pointlessness – and there really is no out. If that seems heavy-handed, well that’s because our shared reality is…a heavy one. I’ve never had much of a drive to build an empire or much less a retirement fund, simply because it’s a lot of shuffling about for nothing…in the end it’s all for nothing. Some days this hopelessness chains me to my bed. But, there are other days where I find myself almost blissful because if there is no point, then there are no rules and you can be whatever and whoever you want to be. It’s maybe the only true hope one can cling to (if you’re serious) and you can only find it deep in the folds of Utter Hopelessness. That, my friends, is what ‘I Can’t Pretend’ is about. No rules – get to it. Love who you want! Do what you want!”

Noisey recently premiered the video for the album’s first single, “Magic Mountain,” saying that the new sound is, “sharp and twisting and somehow both in and out of control.”

The band’s upcoming dates mark their first U.S. tour since 2012, with their last record Portamento. Kanine Records pals Beverly will be joining the band on the road as support starting September 15. See list of upcoming dates below.

“The songs are literal. Pierce has no secrets. What he feels, he sings, and matter-of-factly so…an intensity emerges that’s far beyond lyrics or any of a song’s constituent parts. It’s just there.”

“The Drums have proved that for all the prevalence of glittery synth-carting unicorn-botherers in our times, there’s still a hurricane of heartsore life in guitar pop.”

“That’s what the Drums are all about: real life, and the pains and pleasures (mostly pains) that come along with loving while you still have fresh breath in your lungs.”
