DCTV’s Our Cameras, Our Stories Airs On PBS

DCTV’s “Our Cameras, Our Stories” Premieres Saturday on PBS

First Series 100% Youth Conceived, Created, and Executed

Saturday, October 4th on PBS (WNET 13), Followed by Air Dates Across the Country (Weekly for the Next Six Weeks)

“Our Cameras, Our Stories” empowers young New Yorkers via the opportunity to share their stories on film. These young filmmakers shoot short-form autobiographical documentaries using DCTV’s (Downtown Community Television Center) studio and equipment – each episode of “Our Cameras, Our Stories” is comprised of a few of such documentary films. Each episode exhibits heart-wrenching stories of inner city turmoil, running the gamut of homelessness to gun violence, and yet the young filmmakers all persevere and use their art to become role models for change. A total of 21 films by 21 young New York City young filmmakers will be featured as part of the series.

“Our Cameras, Our Stories” is the first series 100% youth conceived, created, and executed.

One such student filmmaker has recently been invited to the White House! Medgar student Jasmine Barclay will be a guest at the White House for her work on “Our Cameras, Our Stories” with the film, When Life Hands You Lemons. The film documents her struggles of having an incarcerated parent. On October 8th, Jasmine will travel to Washington, D.C. where she will be recognized as a Champion of Change. There, she will screen her documentary and speak on a panel about the ordeals youth face when a parent is incarcerated. The White House Champions of Change initiative “honors local Champions of Change who are doing extraordinary work to prepare individuals and communities throughout the nation for disasters and to help build a safer and more resilient nation.”
