“As if!!!!” Universal Music Enterprises marks the 20th anniversary of writer/director Amy Heckerling’s classic 1995 teen comedy Clueless with the release of the movie’s soundtrack on vinyl out at national retailers on April 7.

Loosely based on Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma, a 19th century tale of manners about matchmaking and romantic misunderstandings updated to ‘90s Beverly Hills High School, the film starred Silverstone, Stacey Dash as her best friend Dionne, the late Brittany Murphy as Tai Frasier, the ugly duckling transformed into a beautiful swan and Paul Rudd as Cher’s disapproving ex-stepbrother.

The soundtrack featured The Muffs’ cover of Kim Wilde’s “Kids in America,” along with Radiohead’s acoustic version of “Fake Plastic Trees” as well as tracks from a who’s-who of the decade’s alternative music stars, such as Cracker (with a cover of Flaming Groovies’ “Shake Some Action”), Counting Crows (cover of Psychedelic Furs’ “The Ghost in You”), Luscious Jackson, World Party (with a rousing cover of Mott the Hoople/David Bowie’s “All the Young Dudes”), Lightning Seeds, Smoking Popes, Beastie Boys, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (who appeared in the film), Coolio, Supergrass, Velocity Girl and Jill Sobule.

Entertainment Weekly selected Clueless #42 on its list of “New Classics,” movies released between 1983 and 2001, and also the 19th best comedy of the past 25 years.  The movie was also nominated for AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Laughs list.  The film turned into a surprise box office hit, eventually grossing $52 million at the box office, and reviving “Valspeak,” the nasal “whatever” slang of Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley.
