Count On You EP Available Now via Movement Records

On August 19th, British soul revivalist Christian Gregory released his critically acclaimed debut EP Count On You via Movement Records. The new label was started by Gregory along with his friend and collaborator Michael Kiwanuka.

Today, Entertainment Weekly premiered the video for Gregory’s track “Won’t Get Nowhere” and said “Gregory sets himself apart with a knack for graceful, clean-lined melodies.”

“The video was really the brainchild of Kaz Ové, who’s an incredibly talented director and also part of the Movement Records team,” says Gregory. “He suggested paying homage to a classic scene from Martin Scorcese’s ‘Raging Bull,’ where Jake La Motta (played by Robert De Niro) takes a serious beating and doesn’t put up a fight. The point of his actions are that he doesn’t go down, which he says to his opponent, Sugar Ray Robinson, at the end of the scene. This became the metaphor for the “Won’t Get Nowhere” video – not giving up is not going down. I loved the interesting angle of the idea straight away so we began putting the project together.”

Recently, Questlove’s Okayplayer debuted the full Count On You EP calling it “a fresh take on neatly-composed soul, full of clean chords and melodies that linger in your head for hours.”

The New York Times’ T Magazine premiered the video for the EP’s title track and said that it “recalls the classic ’70s funk of Bill Withers and Curtis Mayfield.”

Gregory was recently featured on the syndicated NPR program World Cafe where he performed the entirety of his new EP. Host David Dye also featured the track on NPR Music’s regular feature “Heavy Rotation” and said “When I first heard ‘Count On You,’ I was taken with its powerful groove… the song suggests that Gregory has the chops and the backing band to make even more infectious music in the future.”
