Charlie Mars kicks off his fall 2014 headline tour tonight at Revolution Music Room in Little Rock, AR – and he’s bringing a whole new batch of songs and stories with him. The Oxford, Mississippi native is touring in support of his new album, The Money, which will be released on October 14 by Rockingham Records via Thirty Tigers. As a nod to the support he’s received from the Lone Star state, Charlie will play a two-night album release party (October 17 & 18) at Threadgill’s in Austin. The Money completes his Texas trilogy – it was recorded at Sonic Ranch outside of El Paso while Blackberry Light and Like A Bird, Like A Plane were cut in Austin.
On October 24, Mars will return to Minneapolis for two shows at the Dakota, a venue he’s sold out four times in recent years, and he’ll perform at Subculture in New York City on November 7. See below for itinerary.
With The Money, Mars resumes his zigzagging trek through the darkness in search of the light. It’s a theme as old as The Odyssey, laid out in crisp contemporary verse over a lowdown, hickory-smoked backbeat, in the tradition of fellow Southern minimalists Tony Joe White and J.J. Cale.
Mars will appear on “New York Nights…Direct from the Bowery,” airing on SiriusXM’s The Spectrum (Channel 28) on Monday, October 6, at 10PM ET. Host John Varvatos interviews Charlie, who also performs tracks from his new album and spins a few songs over the course of the two-hour show. Mars recently gave a stripped-down acoustic performance of “The Money,” which is the album’s first single, for Radio Woodstock. You can check out the video clip HERE. Guitar World.com’s Acoustic Nation premiered “Hell Yeah,” another track from the album, HERE and noted, “A lazy feeling Grateful Dead-esque strum-based tale, ‘Hell Yeah’ tells the tale of a traveling man with vivid lyrics and an ambling groove. Mars’ delivers it all with perfect restraint.”
“I grew up in a bubble within a poor, impoverished state, with limited access to the outside world. And so my worldview was very Mayberry,” explains Charlie. “And then, when Mayberry falls apart, you realize maybe you’re not gonna find the girl of your dreams and live happily ever after, and you’re not gonna score the winning touchdown. This album is about looking at those things and feeling disillusioned, but still finding the humor and the beauty and the inspiration that is inherent within them.”
Drummer JJ Johnson, bassist George Reiff, keyboardist John Ginty and producer/guitarist Billy Harvey, all of whom also played on the first two albums of Mars’ Texas trilogy, bring an organic sensuality to the album’s 11 tracks.
“There’s something universal about groove music, whether it’s world music or Moby or Widespread Panic,” Mars says. “There’s something trancelike about sitting your songs on top of a groove that I’ve always liked. It’s allowed me to sink a little deeper into the material.”
The pre-order for The Money is underway now on iTunes (http://smarturl.it/TheMoney). It will also be available on vinyl – at www.charliemars.com and at Waterloo Records in Austin – and on CD.
Mars has been operating outside the confines of the major label world ever since self-releasing his breakthrough album, Like a Bird, Like a Plane, in 2009. Since then, he has had two Top 30 singles at AAA radio (“Listen To The Darkside” and “How I Roll”), sold 32,000 records independently, played more than 500 dates and licensed songs to shows like “Parenthood,” “Bones,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Weeds” and “United States of Tara.” In addition to his outings with the Dixie Chicks, he has also toured with artists like Steve Earle, Tedeschi Trucks Band and Citizen Cope and his storyteller solo shows are often sell-outs.
