Noisey premieres newly formed Congolese seven-piece band Mbongwana Star’s debut full-length album, From Kinshasa—out May 19 on World Circuit and distributed in North America by Nonesuch Records—calling it “eclectically awesome” and praising its “gleeful mish-mash of genres,” and referring to the band as “the Congolese septet who stitch together bombastic African rhythms with lithe guitars and sinuous basslines to make your body bang.” Listen to the album in its entirety HERE. The album is also available for pre-order on iTunes and at nonesuch.com with an instant download of the debut single, “Malukayi (feat. Konono No.1).” Check out the video for the track, which underground music site Boiler Room praises for its “…eerie postpunk-sounding guitar work, and an altogether unique vibe” on YouTube here. The band is on tour now in Europe—see below for full tour itinerary.

Continue readingVotiv Music and New York City-based indie rock band CHAPPO are proud to announce the release of the band’s new album, Future Former Self (on iTunes). Out now, Future Former Self is the band’s sophomore LP and a cosmic body of work where the members of CHAPPO explore the abstract nature of time and the experience it has on the perception of reality. In CHAPPO’s world, the concept of time is twisted hopelessly out of focus. Like Rene, the character at the center of this interstellar journey that is Future Former Self, the band seems to have recently traveled back from a distant black hole, bringing with them a kaleidoscope of new and mesmerizing sounds. Continue readingWith his beautifully offbeat, gloriously sun-baked debut LP Slow Gum hurtling our way this summer (June 29th, actually), rapidly ascendant Australian troubadour Fraser A. Gorman’s new single “Shiny Gun” premieres on Stereogum with a music video featuring Courtney Barnett, and it shows just why he is tipped to be one of the best and brightest new talents around right now. Stereogum hailed the video, saying “Directed by Sunny Leunig, the clip is a fine piece of throwback work that Ron Burgundy would be proud of. His friend and label head Courtney Barnett assists as the sports correspondent on a fun ’70s-style news broadcast turned jam session. If only local news was this entertaining.”
