Brian Wilson Joins Mini Mansions
MINI MANSIONS RELEASE “ANY EMOTIONS” FEATURING BRIAN WILSON
VIDEO STARRING COLIN HANKS PREMIERES TODAY
UPCOMING ALBUM THE GREAT PRETENDERS COMING ON T BONE BURNETT’S ELECTROMAGNETIC RECORDINGS ON MARCH 24TH
Mini Mansions announce the release of a two-track digital single, “Any Emotions,” featuring Brian Wilson, + “Geronimo.” Actor Colin Hanks most definitely channels said emotions in an idiosyncratic video for the track, directed by Mike Harris and premiering today. “The idea of working with Brian started after I did a session with him playing bass on a track for his record,” says Mini Mansions bassist Zach Dawes. “We got along great and I went straight to Vox Studios from that session where the boys were doing vocals for ‘Any Emotions.’ As they got into harmonies Brian’s name came up kind of as a pie in the sky idea. I followed up with him and sent him a rough cut of the song. Then that rare moment occurred where the idealized version of something becomes a reality and Brian Wilson served up an endless helping of apple pie a la mode. We are forever grateful for his presence, genius, and generosity.”
“Any Emotions” comes off Mini Mansions’ upcoming album The Great Pretenders, which is due from T Bone Burnett’s Electromagnetic Recordings/Capitol Records on March 24th, 2015. Mini Mansions are Burnett’s first signing.
“The portrait of the spectrum of emotions was our favorite and probably the most ambitious treatment we saw for the song,” says Dawes. “One take, black and white: there was something classic about it right off the page. Due to the straightforward nature of it, it wasn’t about getting somebody famous as much as it was getting someone great. Colin’s name came up as we were brainstorming. He had caught our set opening for the Arctic Monkeys last year and everybody agreed he would be perfect. We are thrilled to have him involved in this and his performance is about as perfect as Cinderella’s foot.”
Mini Mansions was formed in 2009 by Dawes (a multi-instrumentalist who has also worked with Kimbra and longtime mentor T Bone Burnett), drummer/multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Michael Shuman (currently the bassist in Queens of the Stone Age), and vocalist/keyboardist Tyler Parkford (who releases music under his solo moniker Mister Goodnite). They released their self-titled debut album on Josh Homme’s Rekords Rekords.
Noisey delightfully describes the band’s sound as “a serpentine, synth-assisted psych-pop groove with echoed canned beats recalling Prince‘s “Raspberry Beret” (tune!).” Last month, Spin featured Mini Mansions as part of its “Five Artists to Watch”, spotlighting the first single from the new album, “Death Is A Girl,” calling it “brooding and entrancing” and remarking that it “gurgles with the type of noise you’d expect to hear in heavy rotation on Halloween night in the East Village, equal parts macabre and danceable.” The track was also a BBC Radio 1 Single of the Week last month.
Mini Mansions and Friends play an eagerly anticipated headlining show at The Troubadour in Los Angeles on January 28th. Milling about and possibly joining them for this very special show could be several of their musician friends, including Wilson, Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner (also featured on the album), Kimbra, HAIM, a Queens of the Stone Age or two – it is anybody’s guess…
