“His outstanding taste in songwriting as well as his soul marinated voice can easily be compared to the likes of a young Steve Winwood or Van Morrison.” – Rolling Stone
“The finest new male singer/songwriter of recent memory … a vocalist of amazing proficiency and sensual conviction.” – Billboard
“He jumps beyond standard fare on the strength of his voice, a blue eyed soul man’s supple instrument.”
– The New York Times
Remember that mix tape your friend made you way back when – the one that’s forever etched into your soul? These tapes are what inspired acclaimed singer/songwriter Martin Sexton while writing his 8th studio album Mixtape of the Open Road, a musical cross-country trip blazing through all territories of style, cruising through time and place. It’s a charm bracelet of twelve gems all strung together with the golden thread of what Rolling Stone calls Martin’s “soul marinated voice.” Set to be released next week on February 10th via KTR/Redeye, Billboard unveiled the full album today available to stream as an early exclusive.

“The concept of this record is that it’s the mixtape, just like when your friends knew you were taking that California trip and wanted to inspire you along the way,” the Massachusetts-based troubadour told Billboard. “I’ve always wanted to make a concept album. My records have always been range-y, so I’ve always wanted to make, like, a Nashville 1972 a la George Jones kind of record or a Sons of the Pioneers thing or a bluegrass thing or a Zeppelin-esqe/Black Sabbath hard rock album. Or a folk record. I’ve always wanted to do that.”
The album’s first single, entitled “Remember That Ride” was featured by Wall Street Journal upon the album’s first announcement last year where it was called “a slinky groove” with “a loose, open feel that mixes in handclaps, slide guitar licks and slightly distorted vocals on an earworm refrain.”
Sexton’s twilight nocturne “You (My Mind is Woo)” was featured by PopMatters with CMT Edge also raving about the song with the exclusive premiere of Martin’s live in-studio performance video where writer Craig Shelburne stated that the song “would be a perfect addition to any mixtape because it’s sweet, funny, melodic and — this is important — singularly and memorably titled.” Diffuser chimed in as well, picking Mixtape as one of their “10 Albums Worth Looking Forward to in Early 2015” claiming “a new album from the elastic-throated Martin Sexton is always something to celebrate.”
