Portland’s neo-folk heroes dubbed “polished incarnation of Arcade Fire” amidst glowing reviews of Stuck in a Dream record

The MuseBox today announced the release of Bike Thief’s lyric video for “Ghosts of Providence,” the newest single from their debut full-length, Stuck in a Dream. According to The Portland Mercury, the chamber pop created by Bike Thief on Stuck in a Dream is filled with “moments of remarkable, terrifying beauty.” More information on Stuck in a Dream and Bike Thief’s upcoming tour dates is available on the band’s official site.
Described by StarTribune.com as “sounding like a polished incarnation of Arcade Fire,” Bike Thief is the brainchild of vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Febian Perez. Perez was inspired by the Italian film, The Bicycle Thieves, when he named his band Bike Thief. After moving to Portland in 2012 and auditioning over one hundred musicians, Perez finally found band-mates who could help him realize his precise and complex musical vision.
The resulting eight-piece band worked extremely hard to prepare for their first EP, and released Ghost of Providence in January of 2013. PDXPick.com summarized in a review of the band’s debut the extent to which Ghost of Providence realized Perez’s vision: “Bike Thief have produced a multi-layered and complex collection of work that weaves stories and evokes strong images.”
Perez now expects Bike Thief’s debut full-length to “encapsulate the band’s music as it has evolved, capturing the “punchier” quality of our live performances.” The goal of Stuck in a Dream is to mix a bit more of a rock ‘n’ roll feel with the darker, more eerie element of Ghost of Providence .
In a recent interview with psuvanguard.com, Perez acknowledged that he knew exactly what he wanted out of the band back when he was the only member and living in Austin, Texas. It was tumultuous at the beginning, and Perez admits that he is a bit obsessive when it comes to his sound and, by extension, the pieces that make it. Perez is adamant, however, that this obsession comes from a place of passion: “I want to make our music as true as possible to the sound I hear in my head.”
