Hit songwriters Sam Hollander and Kevin Griffin were deep in the midst of a heated, decade-old holiday music debate (Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas” or “A Very Special Christmas” compilations benefitting the Special Olympics) when they both suddenly wondered: where has all the holiday musical philanthropy gone? Where’s the give minus the take? And thus, they formed Band of Merrymakers which announced today that they will release their debut single “Must Be Christmas” (The End Records) on November 17, 2014 in time for the holidays and unveiled the single artwork.

“Band of Merrymakers is a rotating-cast Yuletide super group with one goal: to help raise awareness and donations for non-profit organizations and charities we are passionate about,” says Kevin Griffin, songwriter and frontman of Better Than Ezra.

This year’s Band of Merrymakers includes members of Lady Antebellum, Neon Trees, Fitz and The Tantrums, 311, Better Than Ezra, 3OH!3, Smallpools, The Mowglis, Sinclair, and The Honeymoons. A portion of the proceeds from their upcoming single “Must Be Christmas” will go to the MusiCares Foundation®.

One of the first artists to come on board was Fitz from Fitz and The Tantrums.

“Kevin asked me if I would be into singing on a Christmas song to benefit MusiCares® and I jumped at the opportunity because I believe so deeply in what they do to try and help musicians,” says Fitz. “They have helped so many of my friends.”

MusiCares is a nonprofit organization that was by The Recording Academy® to provide a wide range of emergency financial assistance and addiction recovery resources to members of the music community.
