ON NORTH AMERICAN TOUR NEXT MONTH
Named one of Amazon’s “Artists To Watch in 2015”
Next Tuesday, January 20, internationally praised musician Ásgeir will release the Icelandic language version of his debut album, titled Dýrð í dauðaþögn, in the U.S. Released in his native country when Ásgeir was just 20 years-old, the breathtaking collection of songs made history by quickly becoming the fastest-selling debut ever in Iceland; one in 10 people in the country own the album, which has outsold debuts from Icelandic legends including Björk and Sigur Rós. The ubiquity of Dýrð í dauðaþögn caught the attention of American musician John Grant, who not only saw Ásgeir’s knack for melody, gorgeous harmonies, and amazing sense of rhythm and virtuosity on acoustic guitar, but also the beauty in the album’s lyrics—poetic words touching on nature, fantastical creatures, weather and old short stories—a majority of which were written by Ásgeir’s 72 year-old father, a poet in his own right. Grant eventually helped translate the lyrics to English for the international version of the album, titled In The Silence and released in the U.S. in March of 2014 via One Little Indian/Columbia. The album reached #1 on Billboard’s Next Big Sound chart upon release.
Ásgeir will make his stateside return next month, where he’ll join acclaimed Irish singer/songwriter Hozier on the first leg of his sold out North American tour, in addition to a handful of his own headline dates. The tour kicks off February 6 at Los Angeles’ Fonda Theatre and continues through February 28 at Detroit’s Royal Oak Music Theatre. See below for itinerary.
Tastemakers and critics have wholeheartedly embraced Ásgeir’s stunning and majestic sound. He’s drawn praise from NPR, TIME, The Guardian, Vogue, NME, and more. His soaring single “King And Cross,” featured on In The Silence, has been championed at AAA radio and currently sits Top 25 on the chart. NPR’s Bob Boilen, who raves “Ásgeir’s voice is angelic and yearning, his songs simple and universal,” named In The Silence one of his top albums of 2014, while Amazon has named Ásgeir one of their Artists To Watch in 2015, exclaiming his “soft coo transcends borders.”
