From The Vol. 6 Album, Is Now Available
The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) is pleased to release the full music video for “You Belong To Me,” created as part of the ASCAP Songwriter Residency.
The song was co-written and recorded by chart-topping singer/songwriter Sachal Vasandani (Sony Records), and 16 America SCORES New York City students from PS 325. Vasandani and the students recorded the track at MSR Studios.
“Writing and recording a song with the young students was a blast. I was grateful for the opportunity to share my greatest love, songwriting,” said Vasandani.
The ASCAP Songwriter Residency, a partnership with acclaimed after-school program America SCORES, is an annual mentorship program that provides a platform for songwriters to engage and inspire elementary and middle school students in under-resourced neighborhoods around the country.
Sachal Vasandani has performed at venues like The Blue Note, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and at festivals like North Sea and Nice Jazz since 2007. He released three records with the Mack Avenue label. His 2011 release, Hi-Fly, reached #1 on the iTunes Jazz charts. Produced by John Clayton, Hi-Fly featured vocal legend Jon Hendricks. When not leading his own groups, Vasandani has performed alongside greats like Bobby McFerrin, Wynton Marsalis, Michael Feinstein and many more. His current project features his original songs, and will be released by Sony Music in early 2015. Produced by Steely Dan’s Michael Leonhart, this release puts Sachal in the ranks of other leading singer/songwriters who create their own category doing what they do.
“You Belong To Me” is just one of seven tracks on the ASCAP Songwriter Residency: Volume 6 album, which is now available to stream or download at www.ascap.com/SongwriterResidency. Other artists on Vol. 6 include Grammy Award-winning producer-songwriter Alonzo “Zo” Lee (Ludacris, Usher), Grammy and Emmy-winning producer, musician and artist Narada Michael Walden (Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder), blockbuster film composer Heitor Pereira (Despicable Me, It’s Complicated), Grammy Award-winning songwriter Malik Yusef (Kanye West, Common, Maroon 5), Grammy-nominated songwriter-producer Darhyl “DJ” Camper (Jay Z, John Legend, Big Sean) and chart-topping country songwriter Walt Aldridge (Travis Tritt, Heartland).
