Anna Calvi & Samsaya Release EPs
ANNA CALVI * Strange Weather EP (Domino Records)
Today, Mercury Music Prize nominated Londoner Anna Calvi releases Strange Weather – a 5 track covers EP via Domino Records. Strange Weather was produced by Thomas Bartlett (The National, Antony and the Johnsons, Sam Amidon) and recorded in New York City with special guest David Byrne. Strange Weather includes arresting covers of Suicide, David Bowie, FKA twigs, Connan Mockasin and Keren Ann. “Strange Weather,” a cover of a Keren Ann original, is a mesmerizing collaboration between Anna and David Byrne. The music video was filmed in New York by Alan Del Rio Ortiz. The cover of Suicide’s “Ghost Rider” was recorded with drummer Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley), and Nico Muhly contributes string arrangements to the EP opener, a deconstructed organic reworking of FKA twigs’ “Papi Pacify.” Visit www.annacalvi.com for more information.
Praise for Strange Weather:
“It’s only worth doing a version of someone else’s song if you bring something new to it. Anna Calvi certainly does that on this five-track EP of covers.” – NME
“…she does add something new to each version. It’s often something distinctly ‘her’ that is added, be it a dramatic flourish of Romantic-era piano here, or an echoing scrape of sultry guitar there. Calvi thrashes, broils, sweats, cries and lusts through the EP, and returns to reality remarkably unscathed from Strange Weather. Kudos to Calvi.” – The Line of Best Fit
“Diverging form the fiery nature of some of Calvi’s original material, Strange Weather stands testament to a confident stylistic distinctiveness that spreads well over many textures.” – The Skinny
