While Andrew Gold helped make smash hits for people like Linda Ronstadt, Art Garfunkel, Wynonna Judd, and many others, he also had more than a few of his own. The year after “Lonely Boy” hit the Top 10, Gold toured for his follow-up album, All This and Heaven Too, which contained the track later covered as The Golden Girls’ theme song, the now iconic “Thank You for Being a Friend.”
Previously unissued, The Late Show — Live 1978 is a document of those shows, recorded on the last date of the tour at West Hollywood’s Roxy Theatre, during the second set of the night. Street date is May 12, 2015 on Omnivore Recordings.
The Late Show — Live 1978 presents Gold as frontman, showcasing the aforementioned hits, as well as classic album tracks. His Beatles influence shines on a version of their “Doctor Robert” and it all comes back to rock ’n’ roll with a cover of “Roll Over Beethoven.”
Packaging includes an essay from long-time band member and friend Brock Walsh (writer of “Automatic” by the Pointer Sisters and “Blessed” by Christina Aguilera), as well as unseen photos from the show.
Leslie Kogan Gold, who manages and oversees the Andrew Gold Estate, said, “I was delighted to hear that that Omnivore Recordings wanted to release one of Andrew’s live shows from the late ’70s, recorded as his solo career was taking off. Even better, it’s a performance in his hometown, Los Angeles, at the legendary Roxy. I knew Andrew’s music would be in good hands at Omnivore since the company’s co-founder Cheryl Pawelski had worked with Andrew at Rhino Entertainment on deluxe reissues of his material. Andrew often talked about how magical it was to be a part of such a rich time and place in rock history. Now, Omnivore is giving old and new fans a chance to experience the excitement, artistry and joy of Andrew and his band, playing live on the Sunset Strip.”
It would be impossible to list all of Gold’s achievements in music, but The Late Show — Live 1978 shows that his time in front of the spotlight was not only well deserved, but as monumental as his work behind the scenes.
