“Playing with The Verbs has been the most thrilling time I’ve ever had as a drummer,” says renowned musician and producer, Steve Jordan. Fronted by the accomplished songwriter, musician and singer, Meegan Voss (of the seminal New York bands The Poptarts and The Antoinettes), The Verbs were born out of a mutual love for exploration in music. As Meegan wrote on The Verbs’ debut album, And Now…The Verbs, “everybody here likes some kinda music.”
Previously unavailable, the Verbs’ back catalog And Now…The Verbs (2006) & Trip (2009) has been reissued on Meegan and Steve’s label, Jay-Vee Records, distributed by MRI / Sony. The band’s latest album Cover Story (2015) celebrates the music of the 60s and 70s, inspired by Howard Stern’s on-air rave for their version of “Only Love Can Break Your Heart,” heard on their second album Trip. Little Steven’s Underground Garage was quick to take notice of Trip, naming “Burnt Out Star” in their Top 10 Coolest Songs in the World for 2009, a title also earned by Cover Story’s “’Till the End of the Day” and “Glad All Over.” “Few cover albums are as enjoyable as this cool set,” writes David Wild for the Huffington Post.
All of the songs on Cover Story were previous hits; the band did not try to interpret obscure music, but simply honor some their favorites. Steve adds. “We played a few of these songs live in Japan on our last tour, and the response was fantastic. Most of the audiences hadn’t heard these songs before, but they just blended seamlessly with our original material.”
The Verbs are Meegan Voss, Steve Jordan, Tamio Okuda, (Japanese guitar legend), and Willie Weeks (George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Donny Hathaway). The band recently performed their first US shows in Los Angeles at the sold-out Hotel Cafe and Guitar Center’s 26th Annual Drum Off, where Jordan was inducted into Guitar Center’s “Rock Walk.” “Adverbs” Pino Palladino and Danny Kortchmar are featured on the first two albums, with Pino on two Cover Story songs.
