The Pygmalion Festival, which now includes a TECH component in addition to Music, Literature and the Made Fest, takes place in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. C-U is home to the University of Illinois and one of the world’s most recognized community colleges, Parkland College. The festival takes place throughout C-U and includes two main stages in the heart of Downtown Champaign. A portion of the festival will take place within the walls of Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, the marquee partner in the festival, hosting MUSIC, LIT and TECH festival components on Friday, September 25.
Again in partnership with Ninth Letter, the University of Illinois’ literary journal, the Literature bill is topped by ADRIAN MATEJKA, whose elegant portrayal of the boxer Jack Johnson in Big Smoke was a Pulitzer and National Book Award Finalist in 2014. Matejka will be joined this year by one of the most respected voices in American Letters, BRIAN EVENSON, who has authored 12 books and is the recipient of American Library Association’s award for Best Horror Novel, among many other awards and recognitions. We are also very excited to feature JENNINE CAPÓ CRUCET, whose highly anticipated debut novel, Make Your Home Among Strangers, will be released in August St. Martin’s Press. This year, Pygmalion will also play host to Mortified, a stage show featuring a curated lineup of adults sharing their most embarrassing childhood artifacts (journals, letters, poems, lyrics, plays, home movies, art) with others, in order to reveal stories about their lives.
The Pygmalion Made Fest returns to the corner of Market and Main in Downtown Champaign on Saturday September 26 and Sunday September 27, 2015. 40+ vendors of handmade, vintage craft wares and wearables will be on-site each day that the festival is situated in Downtown Champaign. Interested vendors can apply by going to http://www.thepygmalionfestival.com/made. The full list of vendors will be announced later this Summer.
Finally, The Pygmalion Festival is ready to announce its first major expansion in three years, having implemented a TECH component into the mix for 2015. The Director of Pygmalion TECH, Patrick Singer, has been working with Pygmalion for over three years. “Champaign-Urbana is one of the most viable tech hubs in the entire country, and with a cultural backdrop like The Pygmalion Festival,” states Singer “we felt that a TECH component is an opportunity to move the dial forward and celebrate what makes C-U a center for innovation. We’re presenting a component of the festival that reflects amazing advancements in technology, its integration into our everyday lives, and showcasing the best and brightest in the world of tech and media today.”
The TECH component will be headlined by a keynote presentation from STEPHEN WOLFRAM, founder of Wolfram Research, which is headquartered in Champaign. TECH will be presented alongside the other components throughout spaces in Champaign-Urbana. In addition to Wolfram, guests include JIMMY CHAMBERLIN (Smashing Pumpkins, CEO of LiveOne), JESSICA HOPPER (Editor at Pitchfork), WILL LEITCH (Founder of Deadspin), TOMMY CRAGGS (Executive Editor of Gawker), MORGAN OLIVEIRA (of Hampton Creek), and dozens more.
Last year They Pygmalion Festival was dedicated to the memory of Josh Gottheil who lost his life to cancer in 1989. A portion of the proceeds were donated to The Josh Gottheil Memorial Fund for Lymphoma Research and this year will see the festival generously donate to the fund again.
