Patrick Watson Presents Love Songs For Robots
Patrick Watson’s new album Love Songs for Robots is streaming now at NPR Music as a “First Listen.” Of the album, due May 12 via Domino Records, NPR Music explains, “an interest in mechanical function extends to curiosity about emotional wiring; about how our feelings are fueled by science as much as something more unknowable. Love Songs For Robots’ themes are a natural extension of that fascination, and of a singer-songwriter whose brain seems to overflow with wise and exacting ways to reflect on the way hearts work.” In addition, the video for “Places You Will Go” is out today, watch/share here: http://smarturl.it/PYWGVideo. Of the inspiration for the video, Oscar-nominated directors Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski explain, “The video was inspired by watching the band play small shows leading up to the release…The clip is shot in a small Sequoia cabin in Northern Quebec in a single take, from a single perspective. The reward of this very simple concept is a lively, energetic and intimate portrait of Patrick and the band.” The new music was recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles and Pierre Marchand Studio in Montreal. Of the record, some of which debuted at private concerts in small loft spaces, Watson explains, “I wanted to make a science fiction R n’ B meets Vangelis erotica with a zest of folk kind of record.” It was only halfway through writing the record when the artist found himself having, by his own submission, “a bad year” did more personal themes begin to creep in. “I started thinking about how emotional reactions were more mechanical than we think and the only thing left between us and artificial intelligence is the act of inspiration. Just food for thought.” Watson composes, performs and records his albums with his full band of almost a decade, which includes Joe Grass (guitars), Robbie Kuster (drums/percussion) and Mishka Stein (bass). The recipient of Canada’s elite Polaris Music Prize in 2007, Watson and his band have performed to over 100,000 people at the 2009 Montreal Jazz Festival as well as with full orchestras in Amsterdam and Montreal. Raised and still living in Montreal, Watson himself has composed 15 scores for both film and television, including a trailer for “The Walking Dead” and Wim Wenders’ new 3D film “Everything Will Be Fine”, where he performed the songs “Cynical World” (an original for the film) and “Lighthouse.” Love Songs For Robots is available for pre-order on iTunes with an instant download of the title track. The vinyl edition comes with an additional 7”, featuring a non-album track, and can be preordered along with the CD on the Domino Mart. LOVES SONGS FOR ROBOTS TRACKLIST 1. Love Songs for Robots 2.
