Casey Neill & the Norway Rats Honor PJ Harvey
with Their Version of “The Sky Lit Up”
Limited Edition Cassette EP Available Now
Portland’s own Casey Neill & the Norway Rats have released a new single, their take on PJ Harvey’s “The Sky Lit Up.” The track is available for streaming and free download here (add link), and will also be on the Rats’ forthcoming 12” vinyl EP in September.
The EP will be available on limited edition cassette during three Oregon dates: May 21 at Old St. Francis in Bend, May 22 in Cottage Grove at Axe and Fiddle, and May 23 at Doug Fir (with Annalisa Tornfelt backed by the Sound Outside, and Hook & Anchor featuring members of Blind Pilot).
“PJ Harvey’s music always sounds uncompromising and hungry for perfectly broken sounds,” adds Casey. “She manages politics without being didactic, romance without being sentimental, writes songs that are beautiful and still feral. “Sky Lit Up” is like a mini-movie you watch in your head.”
For this tour, The Norway Rats are Chet Lyster (guitar), Jesse Emerson (bass) and Kevin Byers (drums). Since their last album All You Pretty Vandals, Casey has collaborated and co-written a new record with Japanese guitar hero Takashi O’Hashi as the band Big Bridges (profiled recently on Oregon Public Broadcasting). This January, Big Bridges embarked on a sold-out tour of Japan, with a second run in November that includes solo dates by Neill. Casey is also known as a sideman in the power pop collective The Minus 5, who opened for Tweedy and The Decemberists in March.
