The 78 Project creators Alex Steyermark and Lavinia Jones Wright shot The 78 Project Movie from August 2012 to September 2013, driving across America in a tiny Kia Soul loaded to the roof with cameras, their Presto direct-to-disc recorder, spare tubes, blank discs and a toolbox (which for better or worse they ended up using nearly every day.) Over the course of their journey, the pair visited established and emerging musicians in their homes to cut once-in-a-lifetime 78rpm records. With one microphone. In one take.

This November, 15 of those recordings will become available in one groundbreaking collection on limited edition 33.3rpm vinyl and digital formats online and in record stores worldwide. **The limited edition vinyl is now available for preorder in The 78 Project Shop.

The 78 Project: Volume 2 – Original Soundtrack to The 78 Project Movie contains on-of-a-kind recordings by extraordinary artists not available anywhere else, including GRAMMY® winners Gabby Moreno and Adam Levy and GRAMMY® nominated artists The Bo-Keys, Louis Michot (Lost Bayou Ramblers), Corey Ledet, John C. Reilly, Joe Bussard, and Coati Mundi and established and breakthrough artists Victoria Williams, John Doe (X, The Knitters), The Reverend John Wilkins, Ben Vaughn, Sea of Bees, Tom Brosseau, Little Wings, Ella Mae Bowen, John Paul Keith and The Easy Leaves.

The songs of the Original Soundtrack to The 78 Project Movie are beautiful pieces of the American musical tradition, many of which folks will already know, from classic tunes (“Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen”, “Billy Boy”) to early 20th century pop (“After You’ve Gone”) Cajun dance (“‘Trape mon chapeau”) to children’s songs (“Skip to My Lou”), gospel and spirituals (“I Want Jesus to Walk With Me”, “Deep River”) to murder ballads (“The Knoxville Girl”) and more. The history of the songs is as deep and rich as the warm, complex sound of the grooves they were cut into, and the versions contained in this collection are part of a time-honored tradition, but also exciting and new.

The tracks were recorded in locations across America, including homes, public spaces, a chapel and even one wide open desert. Because each track was recorded in its own unique location in one take onto a 78rpm lacquer disc using a vintage 1930s recorder, they often contain sonic treasures and a magical, antique quality. The album is as much of an adventure to listen to as it was to make.

“The ineffable romance of old recordings makes for magic…ripe with wonder”
– The Austin Chronicle

“I didn’t imagine anything like The 78 Project, in which we discover that not only
are dead media platforms not dead at all, but that they can be gateways into their
own peculiarly new universes of creativity.”
– William Gibson for the Oxford American

Rises above simple vintage worship and does more than just glorify the past – it
helps us experience it.”
– The Village Voice

“The 78 Project grabs American music by the roots.”
– USA Today

The soundtrack LP will be in stores nationwide and on all major digital retailers November 11, 2014, and via www.The78Project.com
